Description Tag

The Description tag is an HTML tag that is used in the HEAD of the Web page to describe the page content for the search engines and users. It can be shown in the search results but its importance has diminished in recent years.

Ideally it should be keyword rich and relevant to the page it is used on, and should be limited to about 150 words in total. It is better to use the keywords towards the beginning of the description so that they do not get cut off when displayed.

There is a fine balance between skilful use of keywords and Spamming so be careful. If you think it looks like spam when you’ve written it – it probably is!

META tags are used to help categorise the content of a particular Web page. They help to ensure the search results are more refined and relevant to the users search.

Title Tag

The HTML Title tag is important as it is used by most of the search engines as the Headline for the search listings or results. It is important to use keywords and good descriptive content wherever possible in the TITLE. It actually resides in the hidden HEAD content of the page. Many amateur sites often have ‘Untitled Document’ as the TITLE of their Web page but this is an important part of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
