Domain Name

A domain name represents the location of a website on the Internet. It’s main purpose is to provide an easy way for people to remember the location of a website without using the numeric based IP address. It is easier to remember www.google.com than 216.239.51.99 (one of Google’s many IP addresses).

Doorway Domain

A Doorway Domain is a Domain Name that is purchased to rank well for specific keywords in the search engines and is a ‘doorway’ that site visitors will enter to reach the main site. An example of this would be an accountancy business in Worcester purchasing www.worcester-accountants.co.uk and moving it through to their main site.

Long Domain Name

A long domain name is one that has between 26 and 67 characters, including the extension eg. .com or .co.uk

URL

Uniform Resource Locator (or URL) is the location of a resource on the Internet. By that we mean the location of a Web page or website. For our convenience, this is done primarily through the use of domain names, as it is easier for humans to remember words, rather than numbers (like 192.168.131.65).

Whois

Whois is a useful utility that shows ownership information for domain names. It also can show registration dates and renewal dates. This is useful if you are tracking a domain name that you hope will be released from its present ownership, or would like to make an offer to buy a domain name from its current owner.
