File Transfer Protocol (or FTP) is used to transfer files from one computer to another. It is often used to put locally edited files on your PC on to a remote server where the website is actually hosted. The Internet is used to facilitate this transfer.

Frames were very popular in the late 1990’s because they gave flexibility and structure to websites. It allowed web designers to combine several pages into one. The main problem was that the individual elements of the frameset indexed in the search engines, whilst the frameset did not. The increased use of CSS to layout pages has rendered this method virtually obsolete.

Flash

Flash is a multimedia program that allows the user to create interactive and animated content for Web pages. The files sizes can be quite small so that they download quickly. The files created are like closed movies so the search engines cannot index the content easily. XML feeds can help address this issue and there are many different methods used to achieve good rankings for Flash based websites.

Favicon

A Favicon is the small graphic that appears in the address bar of your browser. It can also be used to identify a bookmarked website or Web page. It is 16 x 16 pixels so they tend to be quite simple in design. For example, Google has a colourful lower case ‘g’.
